Who we are

## Conservatoire du Nord

### An artistic tuition centre with deep historical roots

The **Conservatoire du Nord (CNord)**, based in Diekirch and Ettelbruck, arose from the merger of two local music schools dating back to the **19th century**.

- The first music school **in Ettelbruck** was founded in **1854**, and flourished under Philipp Manternach from **1881** onwards, before consolidating its position over the course of the 20th century under Emile Feltgen and Marc Jacoby.
- A school was established in Diekirch in **1893** under the aegis of Pierre Olinger, and saw significant developments under Eugène Klein (1913-1930) and Jos Kinzé (1951).
- A law passed in 1998 harmonising municipal music teaching paved the way for their merger. The towns of Diekirch and Ettelbruck established an **inter-communal association** in **2002**, and the school officially adopted the name **Conservatoire de Musique du Nord** on **1 January 2003**. Ever since, CNord has continued to evolve and enrich regional cultural life, initially under the direction of **Marc Jacoby**, followed by **Adrien Théato** and **Sébastien Duguet**.

### A centre of artistic excellence serving the Nordstad area

Based at sites in Diekirch and Ettelbruck, CNord caters to around **1,600 students, supervised by [70 teachers](/about-us/our-team/)**, while also collaborating with neighbouring municipalities where local courses are provided.

By Grand Ducal decree of 5 July 2002, the towns of Diekirch and Ettelbruck created an intermunicipal association for the organisation and management of a joint music school.

Following the ministerial decree of 20 December 2002, issued by the Minister for Culture, Erna Hennicot-Schoepges, this institution has been known as the ‘CONSERVATOIRE DU NORD’ since 1 January 2003.

For several years, the Conservatoire du Nord has been working closely with neighbouring municipalities, and local courses are organised in Bissen, Erpeldange-sur-Sûre, Medernach and Schieren.

Since 20 October 2023, the inter-municipal association has been composed as follows:
